What is Self-Determination Theory?

Self-determination theory is a theory of human motivation and personality that proposes that when people's requirements for competence, relatedness, and autonomy are met, they can become self-determined with self-determination theory.

The existence or absence of environmental variables (in people's present situations and developmental histories) that allow them to meet these fundamental requirements is a crucial predictor of whether or not they will show energy and mental health.

People seem happy when they are pursuing activities that are naturally motivating and linked with their own objectives.

Early psychological concepts that were the predecessors of self-determination theory included the need to be treated with respect, to be part of a group, and to feel competent.

Motivation to form such relationships can be seen as the essence of self-determination theory.

People who work in places where people get what they want even if it means a company has to go out of business and even more people lose their jobs due to cutbacks is a contradiction of the self-determination theory of motivation.

These people today feel satisfied with little change and little ability to explore and be able to achieve new things and greater emotional intimacy. People who use a new way of thinking are less motivated than people who use the Old Way of Thinking.

A new way of thinking motivates you. You want to achieve more than you can get easily and the only thing you can accomplish to become more fulfilled in life is harder.

Some people may believe their creativity and advancement can be known. Just by definition of the being, you have been described maybe someone who helps them take off.

Some people want their rights extended. Both of these causes the self-determination theory of motivation to be compromised.

The Old Way of thinking in a company where workers had no rights nor ownership of their jobs can no longer exist. This means that jobs for many people are now temporary but can be beneficial in the long run.

In fact, by cutting back on employees people are given more time to get stuck and that motivates them to do better.

If people in certain types of work have now received job security, they will feel more morale and less stress. The new theory has given people an option to go to work even though their jobs do not have the same prospect.

On the other hand, there may be people who reject this choice and they will be more dissatisfied and motivated to do what can still have little progress in the long run.


Use of self-determination theory in motivation

So how can you make sure that your goals are within your control with the use of self-determination theory in motivation?

Here are four suggestions of self-determination theory in motivation:

Plan and identify your goals, as well as the rewards associated with attaining them. Check in regularly with yourself, to see how the energy and motivation of pursuing your goals changes over time, if at all.

Ensure that your activities are well matched to your interests, strengths, and personality.

Ideally, in life you want to feel that you can make a choice that is intrinsically linked with your interests and goals, so you know what is truly worth putting energy into.


The three elements of self-determination theory

The three elements of self-determination theory that a person needs to be motivated to do something:

Research shows that the success of a task, the motivational effort involved in the task, and the amount of time a person spends on the task all relate to self-determination theory.

In one study, highly motivated college students took longer to finish an assigned task, engaged in less effortful activities (such as reading their textbooks) than less motivated students, and were more likely to procrastinate.

In another study, motivated students (those who reported wanting to do well) were more likely to study during class, use more high-intensity cognitive resources during the task, and remain more engaged in the task.


Self-determination theory helps to explain how people choose their own goals. It suggests that when people understand their current circumstances, meet their basic needs, and are capable of taking care of themselves, they can choose goals, plan, and create meaning.

The Self-determination theory is particularly helpful for promoting mental and physical health in depressed patients, who often feel powerless and unable to take care of themselves.
